In Memory of Jean Freeman, University of Minnesota
Friday, 15 October 2010 10:01
Jean Freeman received the Dick Steadman Award at the 2010 CSCAA Convention, and has been selected as the first Honoree in the ASCA Class of 2011 to be inducted into the ASCA Hall of Fame next September, in San Diego, California.

Jean Freeman swam for the Minnesota Gophers from 1968-72 and then went on to serve as an assistant coach with the team for one season before being named as the program’s head coach in 1973.  From there, Freeman took the program to new heights and national prominence.  During her 31-year tenure in Gold Country, Freeman produced 27 winning seasons; won two Big Ten Championships in 1999 & 2000; won 208 dual meets; coached two National Champions; 14 Big Ten Champions; 175 All-Americans; and most of all, enjoyed coaching over 1,000 student-athletes.  Among her many honors and accolades, Freeman was a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (1984, 1986, 1996, 1999); collected over 20 American Swimming Coaches Certificate of Excellence Awards; and was inducted into the Minnesota Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992.

In addition, Freeman was the recipient of the 1999 National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy, awarded annually by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.  The award is the highest of its kind in the U.S. and is presented annually to an individual for having contributed in an outstanding way to swimming as a competitive sport and healthful recreational activity at schools and colleges.  Freeman was the first female to win the award in its 41-year history.

Furthermore, Freeman has also coached nationally and internationally as well.  In 1992, she was the assistant coach on the women’s USS Junior National Team that won the Quebec Cup; in 1991 she helped coach the West team to a gold medal at the U.S. Olympic Festival; and in 2004 was on the World University Staff for the U.S. team that competed in South Korea.  Jean was the Minnesota senior chair for USA swimming for many years. Jean is a past member of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules and Championship Committee as well as the CSCAA Board of Directors.

Because of these and numerous other outstanding accomplishments, the Jean Freeman Endowed Scholarship was established in 1998.  It is now awarded annually to a female swimmer who signifies the “total person” concept, and who shows strong motivation, commitment and dedication to personal growth – the embodiment of its namesake.  Freeman remains involved with Minnesota swimming and has served as the Minnesota letter winners “M” Club President.  Among her many honors, she was inducted into the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame in 2000 and the U of MN Aquatics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Jean helped establish and inner city learn to swim program in Minneapolis along with volunteers from both the men’s and women’s University of Minnesota Swimming teams.

Jean was the first recipient of the Frank Kara Integrity Award given by the Athletic Department in 2005 and just received a “Golden Goldy” for being the 2010 “Teammate of the Year” for her lifetime achievements at the University of Minnesota. This past week Jean received the Outstanding Leadership Award given annually by the President of the University of Minnesota.
