Scholar All-America Teams Named

Colorado Springs, CO - The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has selected a record 762 programs from 480 institutions to the Scholar All-America Team for the Fall 2019 semester. Teams were selected on the basis of their Fall 2019 grade point averages and represent 17,685 student-athletes.

Over sixty percent of the selections (470 teams) belong to women’s programs. A pair of defending National Championship teams also posted the highest GPAs in their respective divisions. The Savannah College of Art and Design (NAIA) and Indian River State College (NJCAA) each captured their respective national titles while also posting the highest GPA’s (3.80 and 3.56 respectively) in their respective divisions. The University of Nebraska-Omaha led Division I programs with a 3.76 GPA while Emmanuel College and Saint Catherine’s University both earned 3.77’s to lead Division II and III respectively.

Nearly three hundred men’s teams also earned Scholar All-America honors. Harvard University led all men’s programs with a 3.77 GPA. Lewis University (3.57) and Swarthmore College (3.73) were tops among Division II and III programs while the University of Saint Mary (3.55) and Barton County Community College (3.41) led NAIA and NJCAA.

“The CSCAA Scholar All-America list is a great marker for academic success and provides a benchmark for teams to strive for," explained South Carolina Head Coach and Member, CSCAA Board of Directors.  The Gamecocks exemplified success in the classroom and the pool, ranking second among all Division I men's programs (3.61) and fifteenth among women's teams (3.67).  “Our seniors and captains set very high expectations for the newer athletes entering our program.  One of those goals is to be among the nation's best."

Twenty-three teams, representing nineteen schools, earned Scholar All-America honors for the first time including the Youngstown State University men’s team. Last year Youngstown State became the first public Division I university to establish or resurrect men’s swimming and diving.

The top teams in the classroom were also some of the best in the water. Ninety percent of the Division I and III’s top Twenty Five are represented while eighty percent of Division II schools posted a 3.0 or higher. Those teams included the top-ranked men’s teams of Texas (3.08), Indianapolis (3.24) and Denison (3.40). Also earning the honor were the top-ranked women’s programs of Michigan (3.43), and Denison (3.54).

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation’s first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
