Queens Men, Tennessee Women: 2023 NIC Champions
Elkhart, Indiana - The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) hosted the 2023 National Invitational Championships this weekend. More than 900 student-athletes from 67 Division I colleges and universities participated in the meet, including teams from 19 conferences. The three-day event crowned two national championship teams and honored a male and female athlete of the meet on Saturday, March 11th.
Men’s Team Results
Queens University (NC) won the men’s meet with a total of 674 points. The University of Tennessee came in second place with 562 points and Ohio State University finished third overall with 474.5 points.
Men’s Awards
Jeff Dugdale of Queens was honored as NIC Men’s Coach of the Meet while his swimmer, Alex Bauch, won the 2023 Men’s Athlete of the Meet after contributing 70.5 points to the Royals’ team victory. Bauch earned big points by winning individual titles in the 50 yard Backstroke (21.34) and 100 yard Backstroke (45.67), setting a new CSCAA NIC meet record in the 100 yard backstroke.
Women’s Team Results
The University of Tennessee successfully defended their title after tallying 566 total points. The University of Akron (455.5 points) earned a hard-fought second-place finish over third-place Ohio State University (450 points) by 5.5 points.
Women’s Awards
The University of Akron’s Rebecca Reid scored 71 individual points for the Zips, more than any other swimmer in the meet, and won the 2023 Women’s Athlete of the Meet. Her individual performances were highlighted on the final day with a win in the 100 yard Individual Medley, clocking a time of 55.28 in the preliminaries and a 55.33 at finals. Akron’s head coach, Brian Peresie, was selected as the NIC Women’s Coach of the Meet.
The 2023 National Invitational Championship event concludes a two-year partnership with the city of Elkhart and the Beacon Aquatic Center. The NIC meet moves to the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training (FAST) Facility in Ocala, Florida for 2024 and 2025.
