Improve Technique Skills While Away From the Pool

USA Swimming High Performance consultant Russell Mark continues to be the expert in technique and race analysis. Every year, USA Swimming’s Russell Mark spends more time away from each National Team athlete he works with, than time he spends with them.  Very similar to our current coaching situation where it’s been over a month since you last saw your team in the water – and could be months more – learn how Russell prepares himself in his time away from athletes.  He will use video examples to show the first technique aspects he looks for when he walks on deck.  These tips and tools can help you and your team be better in the water even after all this time away.

Returning to Training - The Post Covid Transition

Legendary Olympic Coach Bob Bowman (Arizona State University) covers the future we’re all thinking about - how to get back to training when we get back into the pool. He tries to answer some of the key questions we will all be dealing with:

1.  When will we return to a more “normal” training environment?

2.  What can we expect it to look like from an athlete preparedness standpoint?

3.  How will we organize our program to transition from the stay at home largely land based activity to structure in water training?

Leveraging the Role of Mindfulness In Sport

Most of us are so focused on training the physical and technical components of sport that we often overlook the critical effect mental health exerts on performance. Mental health is not merely the absence of illness; it’s a dynamic and overarching construct used to describe a person’s condition regarding their social, psychological and emotional well-being, i.e. how we feel, think and act. When we strengthen our mental health, we strengthen our ability to regulate our thoughts, emotions and behaviors, which allows us to positively cope with stress and adversity - an integral part of successful performance.

Decades of research make it clear that emotional and attentional awareness and regulation are traits that foster well-being and pave the way for peak performance. Generating awareness and giving athletes the tools to reduce the likelihood of mental illness, positively cope with stress and anxiety, and achieve these states of mind is as crucial as technique, body alignment, strategy and the like. One way to strengthen emotional and attentional awareness and regulation is through the practice of mindfulness.

Join Olympic Gold Medalist & high-performance consultant, Samantha Arsenault Livingstone, on April 30th for a conversation on how to leverage the role of mindfulness in sport.
