Battle for Spartan Swim and Dive Closing In On Return

The Battle for Spartan Swim and Dive group is excited to share that the latest push to reinstate the Michigan State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams is gaining momentum toward the finish.

After more than two and a half years, MSU is now officially working with the MSU swim and dive advocacy team to collect pledges that would help cover the costs of re-establishing both the men’s and women’s teams. At the direction of the President’s office, University Advancement is collecting conditional pledges from supporters, validating their pledges toward a target of $6.5 million over five years.

That threshold comes from a conversation held in December between remaining Spartan swimmers at MSU and interim President Teresa Woodruff, who told the students that if our group could help cover operating expenses, a return was a reasonable expectation. Woodruff’s office then directed University Advancement to create an MSU-official pledge form for distribution in collaboration with the Battle for Spartan Swim and Dive team. Thanks to the generosity of several lead donors, the group is pulling within reach of that goal.

The campaign is going strong through the group’s social media accounts and personal outreach by alumni and supporters. In less than three weeks they verified more than 60 donations and have, by estimation, exceeded their initial pledge drive results!

That original pledge campaign, launched soon after the October 2020 cuts, brought in more than 330 responses. As the Battle for Spartan Swim and Dive group continues to connect with those donors, they are confident that the next public release will be announcing the return of the Michigan State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams.
